Acute functional products – a brief overview

The outbreak of the epidemic indicates an increased demand for products that can somehow help reduce the risk of contracting the disease or prepare the body in advance to better endure the disease if it was not possible to avoid infection. Is it possible to create such “antipandemic” products not on the basis of harmful “chemistry”, but on the basis of useful natural extracts? Of course there is such a possibility.

Natural extracts are the body’s natural protective shield, which works in several directions at once – it activates the body’s defenses (immunity), normalizes vital processes (digestion, blood circulation, etc.) and also provides the body with a variety of useful substances necessary to fight against a variety of threats can be used (e.g. to suppress the development of viruses).

Strengthening the immune system and fighting viruses are the properties most in demand during the epidemic. In one way or another, almost all extracts have them, but some to a greater extent than others. Especially relevant will be those extracts that can simultaneously strengthen the immune system and inhibit the development of viruses.

With this publication, we open a series of articles on the “antipandemic” abilities of extracts, as well as which topical products can be quickly created based on them and brought to market in a short time. Stay tuned for updates, but general information for now.

Of the available extracts to improve immunity, the following can be recommended in the first place: ginger, thyme, lemongrass (berry and vine), echinacea, birch bark. Especially ginger, no one needs to be explained what it is and why it is useful during an epidemic. In addition, to strengthen immunity, the following extracts can be distinguished: nettle, clover, elecampane, sea buckthorn, viburnum.

Almost the entire range of adaptogenic plants is also suitable for strengthening the immune system: sagan-daily, ginseng, leuzea, lemongrass, rosea rhodiola, echinacea, eleutherococcus, green coffee and a number of others. However, not all of these extracts are equally available, and also some are quite expensive and not suitable for use in mass-produced products – so please check with us for price and availability before including these items in formulations.

Separately, black seed should be talked about. The main function of this extract is to normalize the gastrointestinal tract and eliminate its bacterial lesions, which is almost equivalent to strengthening the immune system. A normally functioning gastrointestinal tract is the basis for the full functioning of the body and its resistance to any challenges, so the inclusion of black cumin extract in the composition of the appropriate “anti-crisis” recipes is more than appropriate.

Coniferous extracts – fir, eucalyptus, juniper, sage – show the greatest direct antiviral activity. Many extracts from spices and herbs also show strong antibacterial and disinfectant and sometimes antiviral properties: cinnamon, cloves, anise, mint, chamomile, lavender, orange, lemon, lemongrass, thyme, rosemary, oregano.

It’s also possible that dill, cilantro, and parsley seed extracts may be helpful, although there is no definitive data on this related to antiviral usefulness – analysis of the scientific literature is ongoing, and if such data appears, it will be published immediately.

Based on the above data, the widest range of emergency “anti-epidemic” products can be developed and brought to market quickly.

These can be, for example, sprays and rinses for the oral cavity, wet wipes and antiseptics. They can also be fillers for aerolamps that help release extracts to fight viruses – mono- and sesquiterpenes are particularly effective at this, coumarins also show similar activity, albeit to a slightly lesser extent.

The best form of consuming extracts in terms of bioavailability is in beverages. Therefore, we recommend paying attention to this direction in the first place – we can talk about both ready-made drinks and concentrates. For the manufacture of these products, water-soluble microemulsions of CO2 extracts are needed, on the basis of which all kinds of drinks can be made – sodas, teas, kvass and many others. And also all kinds of concentrates, among which syrups and liquid spices can be distinguished as the most convenient and understandable for the user.

The easiest way to create an “anti-pandemic” product is to either add an ingredient suitable in meaning and taste to existing products, or create a new product on the same basis with the addition of one or the other active extract from the list bring out.

For example, if you make lemonades, but there’s no ginger among them, add ginger and a new zeitgeisty hot product will appear in your line. Ginseng can be added to the existing lines of premium drinks, and echinacea to the lines of the mass market segment – their addition has almost no effect on the taste of the product, since these ingredients are quite tasteless, but the entire line will be aimed at boosting immunity.

Compositions based on birch bark and useful herbs (nettle, clover, thyme, rosemary) are recommended for meat and fish products. This not only gives the end products the qualities that are in demand during the pandemic, but in many cases also improves their taste and increases their shelf life.

For children’s products, mint, chamomile, viburnum and sea buckthorn are recommended. For confectionery – spices such as cinnamon, cloves, lemongrass, lemon zest and orange. For oils – thyme, rosemary, oregano, basil, as well as compositions based on them. Cottage cheese and curd masses should be flavored with black cumin, since this extract, like cottage cheese, should be consumed in the morning.

Following this logic, you can create many other “anti-pandemic” products on any basis that suits you. If you find it difficult to do it yourself, please contact us for advice. We are always ready to help with development. Further and more detailed information on the current properties of extracts and how and in which products these properties can be used will also be published shortly. This information can be used both for the development and for later advertising of products.

Important! Neither in this article nor in subsequent articles are we and will not be talking about medication. The proposed products are, by their very nature, exclusively preventive and should not be used instead, but together with all other preventive measures during the epidemic (compliance with social distancing, use of masks and gloves, etc.).

In the message, try to give as much detail as possible about what your company’s profile is, what products you manufacture, what products you would like to expand, what difficulties you have in developing them, and the like. The more precisely and comprehensively you describe the core of the task to us, the better we can help you.
